Boarding school plan withdrawn at empty West Leeds Sports and Social Club

By John Baron

Plans to turn former social club into a boarding school for children with special needs in Armley have been withdrawn by the developer.

The plan would have seen the empty West Leeds Sports and Social Club converted into a residential facility for 20 youngsters.

Work would have included partial demolition and extensions; new and replacement windows and doors; new render finish and replacement roof tiles; new hard standing, ramps and steps, playground parking and landscaping works.

Pudsey-based Youth Hubz, a provider of services for children with special education needs and disabilities (SEND), had applied for planning permission.

It’s unclear whether the applicant will return with a revised application.

The Redshaw Road club closed in 2019 and has since fallen victim to vandalism and flytipping.

Planning permission was previously granted in February 2023 to turn the building, off Redshaw Road, into flats and offices. Previous proposals for offices and housing at the site failed to gain planning permission.

The plans were submitted in June.
