Armley Town Street revamp eyes Spring start

By John Baron

A £2.9 million scheme to revamp the Armley Town Street area could start construction in Spring, Leeds City Council has confirmed.

public consultation was held in summer 2024 into ambitious proposals to reduce bus delays while improving the street environment for visitors and shoppers with wider pavements, planting and landscaping and more crossing points.

WLD reported in March that parts of the scheme had been revised following concerns from business owners and shoppers.

In an update on the scheme’s progress this week, a Leeds City Council spokesperson said: “The business case for this active travel scheme on Armley Town Street is due to be submitted to the West Yorkshire Combined Authority in December.

“Final designs are currently being worked on with a view to starting construction in Spring 2026.”

Proposals for the scheme include making parts of Town Street bus-only, new cycling and walking links, upgraded bus stops, speed reductions and measures to reduce rat running.

The scheme is part of Leeds City Council and West Yorkshire Combined Authority’s successful bid of £7.9million from Active Travel England’s Active Travel Fund.

  1. This is going to put more pressure on the Moorfield Road junction and Armley Gyratory. The gyratory is already a no go zone most times of the day due to congestion.

  2. Good idea in principle, but this is just going to cause mass traffic carnage around the area, it’s already bad enough at peak times, but the council no best when it comes to road planning schemes, most seem to make traffic worse

  3. Making town street bus only is a great idea as long as the buses are running as they should according to time tables. Nice for it to be pedestrianised as long as we have police presence as it is not safe on town street any time of day. As a none driver, where is all the traffic going to go if not on town street. Just my opinion, waste of money that could be used for more important things.

  4. It’s nice to see them trying to Revamp the place as Town St was a Busy place back in the day with Good Shop and Cafes i would always walk into town st on a Saturday with my Mum and Grandmar vist Super C the Dome Cafe and Arcade for a Full English then pay a visit to the weigh save for some Cake Mix and cereal but now then for a Treat Saturday Evening it would be KFC and Blockbuster for a Video Town St hasn’t got that vibe anymore it’s the sort of place to Drive through and Not get out of your Car now

  5. Well what can we say Leeds city council have some amazing ideas, armley town street upgrade, how about resurfacing Whitehall road in new Farnley where the road has been dug up 37 times in 2 years by Yorkshire water and British Gas and is subsiding in numerous places, or maybe not as it will just be dug up again as no one seems to appreciate that the people round here are absolutely fed up with incompetence by the council to insist that the utility companies reinstate to an acceptable standard
Leeds city council is a shambles

  6. After hearing the council had awarded the funds to improve the ward where I grew up, my first thought was you’re gonna need a bigger budget or a tactical nuke. Having moved to a neighbouring ward for over the last 20+ years, I remain hopeful a lot of improvements can be done to make it not only look better, but improve the transport network for years to come.

  7. Armley town street was once a lovely place to shop. Such variety, but now it’s awful. A revamp should start with the people using it. It very daunting even just driving through now let alone shopping there. On the rare occasion I used the now closed Lloyd’s bank I was accosted by some shady characters asking for money. I also noticed quite a bit of anti social behavior. Such a shame for this once nice shopping center.
