Armley Festival 2024 invites young people to invent Festival theme

By community reporter

Armley’s annual community and arts festival is back! The event will be held on Saturday 14 September 2024 on Armley Moor from 12pm-6pm.

Organisers are inviting local children and young people to get in touch to suggest a theme for this year’s festival.

Fran Graham, of Armley Action Team, said: “Last year’s theme was ‘Out of this World’ and we want to celebrate all the good things about Armley, and have a lot of fun doing it. Please send your daft and delightful theme ideas to armleyfest@gmail.com and we’ll announce the winner on stage at the Festival.

“Armley Festival is by the community, for the community – so the only way it’s going to happen is if local people and groups get involved.”

Individuals, businesses and groups – can join the Festival Action Team, and help make sure it all runs smoothly on the day. Or you can help in other ways.

Fran said, “We’ll be looking for lots of volunteers on the day itself to help set up and run the event – so please step forward if you are aged 14+ and you can get involved for a few hours on Saturday 14 September. We need you!”

Organisers are pleased that Playful Anywhere’s Playbox will be arriving a week early, giving people more time to play out together on the Moor. Local groups can book the Playbox from Monday, 9 September for their own activities alongside public play sessions run. E-mail armleyfest@gmail.com to book your group’s Playbox session or to offer to help run a public session.

Local artists, makers and independent businesses are encouraged to support the Festival Market, by booking a craft or food stall.

Organisers say it’s a great opportunity to highlight the creative talent that can be found in Armley, and to attract new customers. Market stalls start at £10 and are available on a first come first served basis. E-mail armleyfest@gmail.com for the booking form.

Last year’s Festival welcomed 3,000 attendees on one of the hottest days of the year. Town Street’s Dennison Hall got involved as a satellite venue for the first time. Organisers hope other local venues and Town Street shops, pubs, cafes – will step forward to provide even more Festival fun this year.

The event is part-funded by Leeds City Council’s Inner West Community Committee, and the event is supported by Armley Common Right Trust who maintain the Moor for Armley’s communities to enjoy.
