Armley Common Right Trust’s free hanging basket event returns for 2024

By Helen Fay

The annual Hanging Basket Event held by Armley Common Right Trust is returning this Saturday, 1 June.

This hugely popular event, which is held at Moor Top/ Little Moor in Armley from 10am, gives residents the opportunity to fill a maximum of two hanging baskets per household with plants provided by the Trust and bring some much welcome colour to the community.

The event, which is funded by the council’s Inner West Community Committee, has 250 hanging baskets, compost and a selection of flowers to give away.

People can also bring an empty basket of their own to fill instead if they wish. The event runs on a first come, first served basis and donations are welcome but not required. Armley Common Right Trust trustees and volunteers will be on hand to help residents fill their baskets and are looking forward to this years event after the success of last year.

Trustees would love to hear from anyone who can help out and volunteer on the day of the event – just contact the group via messenger on their Facebook page.

As well as the annual Hanging Basket event, the Trust works all year round on maintaining and looking after six parcels of land – Armley Moor, Far Fold, Moor Top, Charlie Cake Park, Hill Top and a portion of land in Ley Lane.

The trust exists to manage the land on behalf of the people of Armley and makes decisions (after consultations) in the best interests of the long-term future of the land.

Trustees have regular meetings and in addition, quarterly open meetings which are open to all to attend to discuss matters around the upkeep of the land and events taking place.

The Trust holds regular volunteer sessions on the first Sunday of each month where anyone interested can come along and help out with gardening jobs and maintenance that needs to be done on the various pieces of land.

The Trust also runs the twice-weekly Commoner’s Muck Gardening Club sessions at Charlie Cake Park on Wednesday afternoons and at Moor Top on Friday afternoons.

Information about both the monthly Sunday events and the Commoner’s Muck Gardening Club can be found on the Trust’s Facebook page.
