African Palm Crosses mark Easter in Armley

By Andy Dalton

African Palm Crosses are being given away in Armley.

A batch of seasonal palm crosses have been obtained by charity Leeds City Mission – and they are giving them away for free in the days before Easter Sunday.

Sinclair Martin, from the City Mission Compassion Centre in Mistress Lane, explained that many people liked to have a Palm Cross during Holy Week.

He said many people find them helpful as they focus and reflect on the meaning of the Easter season.

Palms were used by the crowds to welcome Jesus into Jerusalem in the week before his crucifixion.  Palm crosses have become a popular seasonal item to celebrate the meaning of easter.

Anyone can call in at the City Mission premises near Armley Library and One Stop Hub and get one free to take home with them.

Compassion Centre Manager Sinclair Martin said that they were open during the week between 10am and 3pm and that visitors were welcome to drop in at the City Mission and collect their own palm cross.

Leeds City Mission is a multi-church Christian agency and organises a range of projects to help people who are on the margins of life.  It is one of the oldest charities in Leeds being in continuous existence since 1837.
