Abbey Dash: Medical centre staff put on running shoes for Armley Helping Hands

Staff at Thornton Medical Centre are swapping stethoscopes and computers for running shoes to support Armley Helping Hands.

Dr Alim, Dr Porteus, Dr Springett and office manager Hollie Burns will be running The Leeds Abbey Dash 10k on Sunday, 30 November 2025 to raise vital funds to support older people in LS12.

Leeds City Council is closing Strawberry Lane Community Centre – where Armley Helping Hands is currently based – on 1 December in a bid to save money. The charity is moving its base to the Cross Grasmere Centre in Armley.

A spokesperson said: “This transition is coming at a significant cost to Armley Helping Hands with a projected moving and renovation cost of £35,000 and a projected rental cost in year one of approximately £10,000 to £15,000.”

“We are reaching out to our community to support us in this challenging time. Every little penny will enable us to make this transition as smoothly as possible and make our new location a welcoming place that meet the needs of our older people and the wider community.

“We remain committed to serving our community and look forward to continuing to deliver vital services, activities and intervention to our older people, families and people living in Armley and Wortley District of Leeds 12.”

Armley Helping Hands celebrated its 30th birthday earlier this year.
