A Pudsey church is marking its 60th birthday with a community street party this coming Saturday.
St James the Great will be celebrating on Galloway Lane from 12 noon till 4pm with a variety of activities including a barbecue, Asian street food, children’s games, face painting, a smoothie bike, a mini beetle drive, Tai Chi, Yoga, Reiki and afternoon teas.
The event is being shared with many other community organisations who use the church and the parish hall, including the Pudsey and Calverley Community and Education Group, which will be celebrating the Muslim festival of Eid, the 2387 Squadron of the Air Training Corps, Scout, Guide, Brownie, Rainbow and Beaver groups.
Parish priest Fr Nicholas Clews said:
“This is a celebration not only of 60 years of history, but of our ongoing partnership with many local groups with who we are working together to build a local community.
“There are many people who are committed to building up a sense of belonging in the areas of Woodhall, Waterloo, Hillfoot, Owlcotes and all the bits in between. This is a celebration of them all and their many activitites.”
The present church of St James the Great was consecrated on 6th June 1959 by the Right Rev Donald Coggan, then Bishop of Bradford, but there had been two previous churches of the same name in the area going back to the late 19th century.
Woodhall and Waterloo had been part of the parish of Calverley and then Pudsey but in 1959 became a parish in its own right. The name Woodhall was changed to Woodhall and Waterloo in 2017.
