Wortley: Proposed travellers site may expand

Plans for a new permanent site for travellers in Wortley are set to be discussed by councillors this week.

Members of the development plans panel will hear that proposals for four pitches for travellers on land bordered by Tong Road, Farnley Ring Road and Lakeside Road should be increased to five.

The increase is the result of a proposed site at Temple Newsam being deemed as being unsuitable for a permanent travellers accommodation. A report to be considered by councillors will suggest the increase will ‘make best use of the site’, which is opposite Farnley Reservoir.

The report adds that the land off Tong Road was one of the sites that “attracted very small numbers of individual representations that did not raise significant matters”. It adds:

“The allocation of sites in Leeds helps ensure that unauthorised non-Leeds based travellers who often pitch in inappropriate locations can be better managed.”

The proposals are part of the council’s Site Allocations Plan, which aims to map out housing, green belt, employment and travellers sites across the city for the next 15 years.

The Dispatch reported last month how green belt land earmarked for more than 200 houses off Gamble Lane in Farnley may win a reprieve until at least 2028.

The development plans panel meeting will be held at Leeds Civic Hall (pictured above) on Tuesday, July 19, at 1.30pm. The meeting is open to the public.
