Armley Town Street will light up for Christmas on Saturday, 18th November, writes REBECCA QUARMBY.

From 12-4pm, children’s activities and stalls will take place in the One Stop with the help of charity organisation MIND.

And those who are wanting to get crafty for Christmas can get stuck in with some art and craft in the Love and Light tea rooms with the Yorkshire Air Ambulance.

Glenn Broadbent, a volunteer at local group All Together Armley, said:

“These indoor places are perfect to ensure people can enjoy the goods and activities in a safe and warm environment.”

To end the day, everyone can get into the festive spirit with the help of stage artists and a street fair which will lead onto the light switch on.

Cllr Alice Smart (Lab, Armley) said:

“We spend a lot of time talking about the problems of Armley Town Street but the switch on is all about reclaiming the centre of Armley for something positive.”

The street will be closed for business from 3-7pm to minimise the disruption for businesses and commuters.

Following the hugely successful Armley Christmas Market debut last year, organisers All Together Armley have made changes to this year’s event.

Having listened to feedback from local traders, stallholders and visitors the market will move indoors.

Armley One Stop Community Hub will host child friendly activity and the Love and Light Tea Rooms will be the venue for craft activities and music.

With over 20 stalls the event is set to bring the community together to share the fun of the day.

Explaining the change volunteer  Viv Adams said:

“We want to make the event better while minimizing disruption to traders, we are also acutely aware how the weather can impact on the success. With predictions of a bitter winter we want to ensure visitors and stallholders stay safe and warm.”

The market will help raise funds for MIND (Love and Light) and Yorkshire Air Ambulance (One Stop).

Entry is free and everyone is welcome.
