The choir festival at Left Bank well and truly raised with roof with 100 singers taking part in an evening of singing and song, writes Anne Akers.
The choirs included Asmarina Voices, a group for refugee women, brought together by Leeds Playhouse as part of its Theatre of Sanctuary commitment to being a place of safety, hospitality and support for refugees and asylum seekers. They performed a song they had written themselves.
The event was hosted by Left Bank Choir, whose director, Emma Sargieson, hailed it as a success.
“Our choir sings here every week, the acoustics in the old church are amazing, and we wanted other choirs to enjoy singing in this beautiful space,” she said.
The choirs, Leeds Vocal Movement, Vocologee, Sing Meanwood, The Cockburn Choir, Asmarina Voices and Left Bank Choir performed in turn, then sang together for a finale.
“We’ve had a very positive response from the audience and the choirs who took part, so who knows, we may be back with another festival next year!”
Left Bank Choir meets every Monday except bank holidays, starting at 7.30pm. All are welcome, there are no auditions and no requirement to read music.
