Pudsey resident Andrew Wood is taking on the 10 Days of 5k Challenge this month, covering a total of 50km to raise money for Cancer Research UK
After having a hip replacement and being registered as blind, this is a real test of determination for Andrew, 47. He is taking on the challenge because cancer has affected him personally and people close to him.
Andrew, who is married with a 15-year-old son, said: “I was a passionate runner between 2015 and 2020. I was running 10k and half marathons on a regular basis. Running really helped with my mental health. However, in 2019 I started struggling with my running.
“Over the course of the next few years I discovered I had arthritis and consequently had to have a hip replacement in 2024. This obviously put an end to my running 10k and half marathon races.
“I’ll be doing a total of 50km throughout the month of October, but I feel passionate about the work Cancer Research UK do. I actually had skin cancer in 2023. I also know friends and family members who have known others who have had this awful disease.
“I know it will be difficult as I only really run 5k parkruns every now and again, and with my visual impairment and hip replacement, this is going to be a test of strength and determination on my part.”
