A commercial partner has been found for Pudsey Post Office, MP Stuart Andrew has said.

Back in January parent company Post Office Ltd announced controversial proposals to close Pudsey Post Office as part of a raft of national cost-cutting measures and replace it with a small counter in another shop or supermarket, on a franchise basis.

The decision was met with an outcry on social media, with many calling for the vital resource to be saved in its present building.

Pudsey MP Stuart Andrew has taken to social media to say the future of the facility had been safeguarded after Post Office Limited had found a commercial partner to take on the branch’s current building and run the operation.

The partner has not yet been named but is believed to be in retail.

Mr Andrew said:

“The proposal, which will go to public consultation, will see the branch remain where it is with same services and other retail. They are wanting to extend opening hours on a Saturday to 5.30pm too. All sounds very encouraging. When I have details of the consultation I will post.”

An online petition against the closure was signed by more than 1,600 people earlier this year. A further 400 signed a local Labour Party petition.

The Dispatch had also lent our support to the campaign.
