Pudsey care home residents choose their community superheroes

Residents at a Pudsey care home helped choose local community heroes to receive awards during a Superhero Day celebration in support of Alzheimer’s Society.

Hutton Manor, on Crawshaw Road, held its annual event recognising team members, volunteers and community supporters whose kindness and dedication make a difference to life at the home.

Nominations were gathered through conversations with residents, relatives and team members in the weeks before the event.

Residents were then given a list of community nominees and asked to choose those they felt most deserved recognition.

Volunteer Maddy was recognised for her contribution to the home, while fellow volunteer James was honoured as a community champion.

Steve Sanderson, a Royal British Legion (RBL) member, received recognition for supporting the home and for his volunteering with the organisation and wider community. Pudsey councillor Trish Smith was also honoured for her continuing support for Hutton Manor and for speaking up for others in the community.

Among the team members recognised was Carer Andrei Tuculeanu, who received a resident champion award for the care he provides.

The day began with a discussion about everyday superheroes and stories of people who had gone above and beyond for their community.

In the afternoon, guests joined the home for a buffet and live music from maintenance team member and professional drummer Haydn, followed by the awards ceremony.

Recipients recognised as “Hutton Manor Heroes” received certificates and token gifts, while those named “2026 Superheroes” received trophies, flowers and chocolates.

Zaneta Balcerak, Home Manager at Hutton Manor, said: “Superhero Day is a chance to recognise the kindness and dedication of our team members, volunteers and supporters in the local community. It was particularly special for residents to help choose the community award winners and thank people who make a difference to life at Hutton Manor.

“Alzheimer’s Society is a cause close to our hearts, and it was lovely to combine fundraising with a thank you to our everyday heroes.

“With September marking World Alzheimer’s Month, we hope the celebration also encourages understanding and support for people living with dementia and their families.”

he event took place ahead of World Alzheimer’s Month in September, an international campaign encouraging greater understanding of dementia and challenging the stigma surrounding the condition.
