A street in Farsley which houses cafe bars could be pedestrianised to help give part of the Sunny Bank Mills development a new lease of life.

A planning application has been submitted to alter the car park, add an external seating area and pave Paradise Street, off Farsley Town Street.

The one-way street would be pedestrianised with reclaimed Yorkstone paving, with the seated areas featuring stone resin.

A planning statement submitted by the developers said:

“Pedestrian priority on Paradise Street will enhance the existing businesses and complement the established thriving town centre, ensuring a competitive market and widening customer choice.

“The employment opportunities it generates will also encourage prosperity and sustainable economic growth for Farsley and the wider community.”

The statement adds that Paradise Street is a steep, shared vehicle and pedestrian access, which narrows substantially at the main access to the Old Combing building. It says:

“This situation is having a dangerous and negative impact on the building users. The provision of external seating areas in front of the Old Combing would also benefit the thriving businesses within.”

It concludes:

“The continued refurbishment of vacant units at Sunny Bank Mills has the potential to improve the Farsley area in the long term. Sunny Bank Mills aspires to regain the importance it held for Farsley in the 19th and 20th century both as an architectural focal point and more importantly as an employment generator.”
