A weekend of community celebrations kicks off at New Wortley Community Centre today.

The event starts today (Friday) with a variety of events, including a parade. And tomorrow will see the official opening of the new £640,000 building at the centre, off Tong Road.

New Wortley Community Festival 2017 starts at noon today when the event is opened by Leeds Lord Mayor, Cllr Gerry Harper, followed by a community parade around the estate.

This afternoon there will be a community fair between 1pm-4pm, featuring zumba, martial arts and a variety of projects and organisations. This evening there will be a community cabaret at the centre from 6pm.

Tomorrow will see the £640,000 new building at the centre openbed by members of the community.

There will be events at both the centre and Bethel Free Church in the afternoon.

Full details of festival events over both days can be found here.

New Wortley Community Centre’s £680,000 building, which sits alongside the old one, was orchestrated by New Wortley Community Association and funded by The Big Lottery.

The official opening is the culmination of seven years’ planning and hard work to make local residents’ dreams become a reality.

A spokeswoman said:

“The new building is already well used by local residents and provides a range of activities, including volunteering, adult education and health and wellbeing.

“The new building is a ‘stand out’ landmark on the famous Tong Road route into Leeds and has already gained much attention from its distinctive look and presence on the edge of the road.”

New Wortley Community Association, which runs the centre, is a charity founded and run by members of the local community.

The board of trustees, staff and volunteers work in conjunction with other local projects, charities and public sector organisations to help residents of the local area improve their quality of life, raise aspirations and offer hope and opportunity to the people of New Wortley.
