Armley campaigners are urging people to take more of a pride in their community by joining a big tidy up session this weekend.
The Keep Armley Tidy community litter pick takes place on Saturday, 8th July. Meet at the Love and Light Tea Room near Wilkinsons at 10.30am.
The clean-up has been organised by local resident Lou Cunningham and the All Together Armley group.
Glenn Broadbent, from All Together Armley, said:
“The community is coming together to send a message that it’s wrong to drop litter and fly tip. We also want to show that people are taking a pride in Armley and would encourage people to come along on Saturday and join in.”
Part of the clean-up will focus on the Armley Park area.
A group of around 15 Swallow Hill Community College pupils will be picking litter on streets near their school on the Friday as part of the Keep Armley Tidy campaign. And British Gas volunteers will be active at the junction of Theaker Lane and Town Street the same day.
Community-created daisy boards in different languages, which encourage people not to drop litter and take fly tip, will also be displayed in different parts of Armley.
Mr Broadbent added that new litter bins will be installed in rubbish hotspots on Town Street and existing bins in the area will be replaced with new ones and branded with the ‘Keep Armley Tidy’ message.
Armley follows in the footsteps of Harehills as only the second place in the city to receive the bins. Funding comes from Leeds City Council and the national Keep Britain Tidy campaign.
