Members of MHA Communities Horsforth are taking part in Miles for MHA this month. And friend of the group, and local PCSO, Julie Richardson is adding something a bit extra to the challenge.
Julie will be running 2K every day in September as part of the challenge, which is open to all of the community, which encourages people to run, walk or cycle throughout the month to support the work of MHA Communities.
Julie told us how important the organisation is to her, personally and professionally, and how their activities contribute to the community.
She said: “To me it’s not just a drop in and have a coffee and go. It means more to me than just that. The friendship groups and stuff that it’s created. I love it here. I could spend hours here. It’s just a nice place to be.
“A lot of people rely on it. If it’s one person’s day out for a few hours it makes all the difference to them. Puts a smile on their face. A lot goes on behind the scenes as well so that extra support with funding will go a long way.”
Nicky Morris is one of the co-ordinators at MHA Horsforth. She said: “The challenge is to support MHA Communities Horsforth to provide activities and services for our members and Julie is running 2K every day throughout September, 60K in total, for our scheme.”
It’s not too late to join in the challenge and go Miles for MHA in September. Get your sponsorship form from MHA Horsforth, choose a distance goal from 10K to marathon, tell your friends and get going. Keep a record of your mileage and then at the end of September collect your sponsorship money.

The challenge is helping to support MHA Communities Horsforth run a variety of social activities for over 55’s across the week based at Central Methodist Church on Town Street, including the very popular Bacon Butty Club on Tuesday mornings and lunch club on Thursdays.
Activity groups include craft group on Wednesdays, as well as the Friday weekly walking group and dancefit. Every month there is also a Friendship and Entertainment social with Home Instead, with music, refreshments and a raffle. This month’s social takes place on Wednesday 16th September between 1pm and 3pm and features entertainment from Gaz Stokes.

A new exercise class starts next Monday, adding to an already packed programme. Mobility and Injury Prevention, hosted by Lisa in a gentle exercise class designed for over 55’s to maintain mobility and independence in everyday activities, and reduce the risk of injury. The class is £6 per session and runs from 2pm to 3pm every Monday from 7th September.
Next month the scheme celebrates its 30th birthday with a big party on the 8th October. There’s also a special event next month with a concert from The Leeds Waits on October 7th. The performance blends music and history, starting at 10am and admission is £2.50.
