Hey amigos, this new Spanish group is putting Armley on the map

Hola amigos! A new group in west Leeds is  saying ‘hableme en Espanol*’ at a new Spanish speaking group.

The Armley-based Spanish language exchange group ‘Armley Intercambio de Espanol’ meets regularly at Cafe 53 on Stanningley Road and in just a few weeks has accumulated an active Facebook group with more than 50 members.

One of the founder members, Armley resident Louise Atkinson, 35, says she has been learning Spanish ‘on and off for a while’ and wanted to become more fluent. She adds:

“It’s a fun and informal social group, no pressure, where people come and learn a little Spanish each time. We wanted to put Armley on the map, bring people to the area also wanted to do something to help community spirit. That’s the point for us, to be local and not city centre.

“We’re all at different levels language-wise and set each other little tasks so we have something to focus. For example we could spend one week looking at a verb and then practice using it in context. We’ve also got Spanish speakers who want to learn more English coming to the group too, so there’s something for everyone really. Everyone’s really friendly.”

Louise is one of the founders of the group alongside local resident Susan Wilkinson and Cafe 53 co-owner Claire Alcock.

  1. Hi. My name is Dave and I am one of the artistic directors of Manic Chord Theatre, a professional theatre company in Leeds. We are looking for a group of 7-10 fluent Spanish speakers to come and record a party scene with us. We just need your voices. You won’t be put on stage or on camera. We’ll provide food and drink. It will be great fun and will last a few hours. We haven’t set a date as we are fairly flexible but the sooner the better. Would anyone/ any group of friends be willing? Thank you.
