NEW INFORMATION** – I am delighted that Fiona & Terry from Geo.Spence will be attending our History Event on
Monday 10th February at 6-7:30pm. Geo.Spence have been in the local area since 1888 and have a wealth of information about the area. If you would like to know more about their history please go to
https://geospence.co.uk/about/
Everyone is welcome on the 10th, come down, have a coffee and learn more about the area and your community history!
Thank you to those that attended our first New Wortley History Group. I have a small library of local booklets for members to borrow and perhaps discuss in our next meeting what we learned. Did you know that the name Wortley means herb field, “Wort” being the old name for herb and “Ley” being the old name for pasture land? As is the case with many place names they are formed from their surroundings. Did you know that Wellington Bridge used to be a toll bar or that there used to be trout in Wortley Beck? There is so much to discover.
Come along and share your knowledge, your interests and have a cup of tea. If anyone would like to contribute any old photos or historic stories of your area please send them to myself and i will share with the group rhea.bentley@newwortleycc.org
Looking forward to the next meeting at New Wortley Community Centre.
