Going boldly to more pubs than most can manage in one day, the popular Pudsey Pub Crawl returned for another successful jaunt around the many hostelries of the town, writes Damon Sugden.

More than just an endurance event, the Crawl boasts a loyal following with a fantastic community spirit and tremendous support from the participating venues.

The first Pudsey Pub Crawl was held in 2002 and has been a consecutive annual event since 2008.

Despite being shorn of classic venues such as the Junction, Crown and The Park, the Pudsey Pub Crawl still visits an impressive 21 licensed venues. In fact the 16th outing of this organised event was more popular and well supported than ever.

This year a record 44 crawlers started at 10am for breakfast and drinks at the Britannia Inn. The committed revellers moved from venue to venue during the day, the finishing line being crossed at 12pm at Bojangles of Lowtown, having walked a total of 4.7 miles.

Crawl organiser Raz Bainbridge said:

“More and more people join us every year, but we’ve got to keep it organised and sensible, this ensures everybody that joins in has a great time. We’re having a really good day today and its a good laugh.

“We started out with 44 and we had increased to 86 people by the time we got to the Royal Hotel for the BBQ (this got to over 100 people later on).

“It;s really well supported and it’s great for Pudsey.”

John Richardson said:

“I like the belonging – like minded people coming together and having the odd drink or two. Well I say one or two drinks ha ha, its just nice to see people enjoying themselves for a change. People that don’t normally hang out congregate together and enjoy each others company and the best the town has to offer.”

Andrew, who lives away from Pudsey but comes back just for the Crawl said:

“This is my second Pudsey Pub Crawl. I grew up in Pudsey, went to the Grammar School but don’t live here anymore. Ive just been to my old local for the first time in 40 years, it’s great!”

In an age where pubs, clubs and bars are becoming an endangered species, the Pudsey Pub Crawl shows that people still want to get out, socialise and enjoy themselves. The well thought out itenary ensures that the party atmosphere lasts from start to finish, and only friendly, responsible behaviour is encouraged.
