Hundreds of apples are being given away to people in the Armley area.
Leeds City Mission (LCM) are repeating a harvest project which has become an annual feature in recent years.
Mission staff and volunteers are placing trays of apples on a table outside their premises for the next two to three weeks and are inviting members of the public to come and take as many as they want for free.
Every apple is handpicked by volunteers from a variety of apple trees. Both eating and cooking apples are available
LCM Compassion Centre Manager Sinclair Martin said that the apples can be eaten as fruit or used to make pies, crumbles, sauce, jams and salads.
The provision of food at the City Mission’s foodbank is proving to be a lifeline for many local people. The provision of seasonal fruit is also helping to promote healthy eating and good diet for visitors accessing the foodbank at the LCM Centre in Mistress Lane.

Anyone is welcome to call at the Centre between 10am to 3pm Monday to Friday and take a quantity from the ‘Apple Table’ on display. Visitors are encouraged to bring a small bag with them.
City Mission Development Worker Andy Dalton commented that staff and volunteers were hoping to exceed last year’s total of 1000 apples collected and distributed. Over 600 apples had already been picked and given away.
He added “Leeds City Mission’s is seeking to provide good fruit and encourage healthy eating by local people. The provision of these free apples will also help people struggling with budgets under pressure in these days of rising prices.”
Leeds City Mission is one of the oldest charities in Leeds being in continuous existence since 1837. It is a multi-church Christian agency which organises a number of projects from its premises in Mistress Lane helping people at the margins of life.
