It was third time lucky as West Leeds RUFC‘s big day out at the RFU Senior Vase Final at Twickenham ended in victory. Wests missed out last year and a few years previously but they completed a notable double when they beat Withycombe yesterday lunchtime. Glenn Broadbent was there.

A mixed 1st half saw Withycombe struggle with Wests’ pace and they were 21-0 up after 15 mins.

Withycombe hit back to make it 21-17. Despite the threat of a Devonshire comeback Wests scored a further three converted tries to make it 42-17.

A consolation trie from Withycombe at the end made it 42-22. The West Leeds hoardes celebrated into the small hours and, as I write, the first bottle of Bud has been sighted at breakfast.

“I’m honoured to be captain of this side,” said West Leeds RUFC captain and try-scorer Sam Neave. “Having lost last year, it’s amazing to win at Twickenham this time and to score twice made it even more special for me.”

Wests now move on to the third part of the treble with a quarter final tie at Bradford Salem on Wednesday.
