Yorkshire Premiership Merit Table Play-Off

West Leeds 2nd XV 15-31 Morley RFC

Sandal (Wakefield) played host to this game with West Leeds designated the home side, writes Glenn Broadbent.

Morley kicked off and at some pace and looked like they would score from the start and tested the West Leeds defence to its limits. Wests hit back against the run of play but missed a penalty chance on four minutes.

It soon became evident kicking would be their problem all afternoon as they kicked away possession allowing Morley the first try on ten minutes 0-5.

Wests did convert a penalty soon after following persistent offside from Morley 3-5.

As with much of this game the next 8 minutes meandered around the centre of the paddock with each side having their share of play. The “Home side” then showed enormous strength and unity to score a solid try which was converted 10-5.

Yet again Wests kicked away possession and some clinical passing by Morley saw them draw level with an unconverted try.

The game then slipped back into a pattern of hard work and endeavour with no result, the highlight being an interception from West Leeds centre which made a good 40 yards’ advantage. HT 10-10.

It was 15 minutes into the second half before the next score with patterns having been repeated again and again. Morley collected the ball and broke from their own 25-yard line to score under the posts, leaving West Leeds defenders in their wake. 10-17.

Morley were now stepping up their game and thought their pack had added to the score but the referee said no. West’s defence was determined not to let them pass and stuck to their task with resolve, denying them time and again.

It was Morley’s backs who in the end made the difference and a strongminded run from the impressive Morley 11 extended the lead to 10-24.

This was the cue for West Leeds to come to life and play something approaching their normal standard and they were rewarded on 75 minutes for 15-24.

The comeback didn’t come and it was the final try of the game which was the highlight of the 80 minutes, a spectacular individual effort closing proceedings 15-31.

To rub salt into the wounds West Leeds being to designated home side had to pick up the bill for the referee’s expenses!!!

Despite the defeat this is a season to be proud of and you can’t take away the title of champions from the team.

1st XV

North Ribblesdale 17-41 West Leeds

One step closer. Despite trailing 17-6 at half-time and being pushed around the pitch by an aged but effective Ribblesdale pack West Leeds eased into the play off final with this victory for a place in North One East.

They will play South Shields and Westoe with the venue to be confirmed.
