An impressive number of people from across the city gathered at Pudsey Civic Hall to attend a Clean Leeds conference, writes Debby Dean.

The conference was held ahead of the nationwide ‘Great British Spring Clean‘ events, which are set to take place from 3rd-5th March.

After a warm welcome from Kirkstall councillor Lucinda Yeadon, Leeds City Council’s Deputy Leader and Executive Member for Environment and Sustainability, guest speaker Kristian Bentham, of Keep Britain Tidy, highlighted the fact that a hefty 62% of the UK population drop litter.

He explained some of the work that his group do on both a regional and national basis to tackle the problems that this causes alongside other anti-social behaviour such as fly-tipping and irresponsible dog ownership.

It was clear from the response of the conference delegates that where we live and how we live matters a great deal to us.

A series of workshops were held throughout the day to share ideas and promote discussion on how to tackle issues at a grass roots level resulting in the creation of a ‘Litter Free Leeds’ network which aims to offer support, share good practice and promote community events.

The Facebook page for the Litter Free Leeds group can be found here.
