Residents in Armley are being invited to have their say on the future of the former West Leeds Family Learning Centre.

Councillors Alison Lowe, Alice Smart and Jim McKenna have called a public meeting for Thursday, January 14, 5.30pm-7pm at Swallow Hill Academy to discuss how the empty site could be used in future.

The site used to house the former Whingate school before the building, which had been deemed surplus to requirements by the council’s education department, was demolished last year.

It’s understood the council is looking to sell the site.

Cllr Lowe (Labour, Armley) said she was keen for as many local people as possible to voice their opinion on what should happen at the site. She added:

“This future of this site needs to be decided and we feel very strongly that local people should have every opportunity to help shape what that future may be.

“This meeting is designed to do just that and we want to encourage as many residents as possible to attend, it is important that we hear their views, after all, this is part of their community.”

Council officers are also due to attend the next Armley Forum meeting on January 19 at Armley Library to discuss future options for the site.

As reported by the Dispatch in November, Cllr McKenna told an Armley Forum meeting that the former Whingate School building had fallen into disrepair and anti-social behaviour ‘had been causing a lot of problems’ in the area prior to demolition.
