Ten-man Farsley Celtic returned to winning ways as they comfortably dispatched basement club Burscough FC 3-1, writes Thomas Ritchie.

Burscough made a stunning start as they took the lead inside a minute, Adam Clayton gifting the ball away to Mamoke Akaunu who slotted home past a stationary Graeme McKibbin.

Lewis Nightingale then received a yellow card for diving as he attempted to win a penalty, before a fine tackle was adjudged a foul by referee Patrick Mahon, who controversially gave Nightingale his marching orders.

Despite Burscough having a man advantage Farsley started to take control of the game and midway through the half, Farsley deservedly levelled, Walshaw firing home a terrific free-kick.

Aiden Savory then headed just over from a Jordan Deacey corner before Walshaw produced a save from Chris Cheetham. On the stroke of half time Farsley took the lead, Deacey playing through Ross Daly who beat two players before firing into the bottom corner for his first goal of the season.

The Celts should have extended their lead early in the second half as Cheetham’s miskick fell to Deacey who’s shot was blocked before the ball fell to Walshaw, but Cheetham recovered to deny the frontman.

Richard Marshall then produced another save from Cheetham as Deacey’s free-kick fell to him at the back post and his volley from a tight angle was pushed away.

Adam Clayton then played an inch perfect through ball to Walshaw who beat the offside trap but not Cheetham, the ‘keeper making another fine save.

Anthony Shinks had Burscough’s best chance to pull level as he headed a corner just over. Substitute Ryan Watson, on his return to the club, secured the three points as he fired a superb strike into the top corner from the edge of the box to end any hopes Burscough had of making a comeback.
