A Leeds-based charity which supports rough sleepers has been supported by staff at a new discount store opening on Armley Road today.

Workers at the new B&M Bargains store were asked to nominate a local charity they think deserves some VIP treatment for the work they do for the community.

They chose Simon on the Streets, which offers emotional and practical support to rough sleepers and homeless people with unmet complex needs.

In addition to opening the new store, representatives from Simon on the Streets also received £250 worth of B&M vouchers as a thank you for taking part and for all their hard work in the local community.

The store manager, Victoria Parker, said:

“The team from Simon on the Streets really stood out for us as they go the extra mile for the homeless, we wanted to give them some VIP treatment as a thank you for all the hard work they do. We hope that our donation can help them to continue the great work they do.”

As previously reported, the new B&M store is creating 50 new jobs at the former Denso Marston factory site, which forms the new Armley Retail Park.

Discount supermarket Lidl will operate a 20,000 square foot supermarket on the site, and there will also be a Farmfoods frozen food outlet. The £8.5 million retail park development is expected to generate more than 100 jobs in total.

The site has been empty since the 1990s and had been falling into neglect.
