Ambitious proposals to open up 100 hectares of greenspace in the Kirkstall Valley will be discussed at a seminar in Leeds tomorrow.

The seminar will discuss ideas for an eco-education park in the heart of the valley.

The park will feature educational visitor attractions – including a new public park for the city and a visitor centre between the Kirkstall and Armley wards – and sustainable product outlets.

There will be opportunities for walking, cycling, running, canoeing, fishing, bird watching, community food production and a wide range of sports and outdoor activities in a largely traffic-free environment.

Basic ideas for the scheme have been floating around for the past five or six years and available to view at the Kirkstall Valley Park website. But Cllr John Illingworth (Lab, Kirkstall) now hopes to kick on a gear and start to make things happen on the proposals.

Brazilian Summer School interns from the Science Without Borders (SwB) exchange programme have been working with lecturers from Leeds Beckett University and University of Leeds to come up with some ideas.

It’s hoped the new park will form an area as extensive as Roundhay Park.

The seminar tomorrow (thursday) is free to attend and will be held at Old Broadcasting Place, off Woodhouse Lane. The event starts at 6pm and tickets are still available.
