Volunteers from Team Kirkstall have been carrying out riverbank clean-ups since the Boxing Day floods of 2016 wreaked havoc in Kirkstall. Here, Phil, Bobby and Ben from the Team Kirkstall River Stewardship Committee bring details of tomorrow’s (Saturday, September 2, 2017) latest clean-up. Will you join them?

This weekend’s volunteer day will be at Burley Mills Woods – starting at the entrance to St Ann’s Mills on Kirkstall Road, near the Big Mc’s Container Storage sign.

Your leaders on the day will be Phil, Ben and Bobby – and they will answer any questions you have as well as making sure the day goes safely and is a lot of fun.

We will meet at 9.50am to talk through the plan for the day, including the risk assessment and a talk about what tools we will use on the day.

We begin work at 10am and work until 2pm weather permitting.  We break for tea at 12 noon and then continue until 2pm.

Really hope to see you all there and make some great headway into an area that seriously needs some love and attention – together we can really make a difference and get it looking beautiful and on the way to being a better habitat for local wildlife.

Tasks will focus on removing whatever large items of debris from the woods and goit, which are safe to remove.

We will also remove the litter and small items which have been dropped by pedestrians. There are some wooden benches to repair, and should time and funds allow, we might tackle this task as well.

We also plan to re-seat some stones which have become dislodged from several benches and walls/steps and fix them with new mortar.

Phil, Bobby and Ben will be leading and will supply all the necessary equipment but please come dressed for mucky work and wet weather. Strong footwear and wellington boots are advisable.

Team Kirkstall will provide all litter pickers, gloves, tools and safety equipment as well as hand washing facilities and sanitising facilities, and instruction in the use of any equipment which you are not familiar with

Thank you all so much for your continued support, help and encouraging commitment – it means the world to us!  if you can’t make it, please share, so others can!

After the volunteer day, please join us for lunch at the West End Pub, paid for by us as a great big thank you for the hard work everybody has put in on the day!
