Events are taking place across West Leeds and the whole city from today for The Great Get Together Weekend, writes Jill Buckley.

The events are organised to celebrate the late MP Jo Cox’s belief that we have more in common and bring communities together.

Jo, who was killed in June 2016, said in her maiden speech to parliament:

“We are far more united and have far more in common than that which divides us.”

Armley Mosque, in Brooklyn Terrace, host a Great Get Together from 3:30pm-5pm today, Friday 22nd June to celebrate Leeds’ diverse communities and all they have in common. Food will be shared and Leeds West MP Rachel Reeves will discuss Jo Cox’s legacy.

Newlay and Whitecotes Residents (NAWRA) invites residents from Bramley, Newlay, Horsforth and further afield to join them for their get together on the Railway Bridge opposite the Abbey Inn at the bottom of Pollard Lane in Bramley from 12pm this Saturday. There’ll be live music and you are invited to “bring a dish and bring a friend”.

Meanwhile elsewhere in Bramley at the Copper Beech Hub off Broad Lane there will be a community barbecue at 1pm this Saturday organised by Bramley Salvation Army. Booking is advised for catering purposes.

And in Pudsey there’s a good, old-fashioned family fun day in Park Square, between the library and Butchers’ Arms from 10am-1pm, featuring face painting, games and stalls.

It’s not to late to organise your own event. Maybe just invite your neighbours round for a cuppa and a cake? Or enjoy the anticipated lovely weather with a BBQ in the garden? You can find more events and more about the Great Get Together on the website.
