Chris Howarth scored his first goal of the season and went onto complete his hat-trick in pouring rain and on a difficult surface as Farsley Celtic defeated Goole AFC 5-2, writes Thomas Ritchie.

This Integro Doodson League Cup win sets up a third round tie away to Ashton United.

Both sides struggled to adapt to the conditions early on, with Richard Marshall going close for Farsley before a terrific, curling strike from Goole’s Sanchez Payne cannoned against the upright.

Midway through the half Goole took the lead as Danny Chambers played in Charlie Shelley, who rounded a Celtic defender before slotting past Graeme McKibbin in the Farsley goal.

Chris Atkinson then had a chance on his Farsley debut, firing wide from the edge of the box before Marshall had another chance as he turned on a sixpence before shooting inches wide of the upright.

Farsley did pull level as Aaron Hardy squared to Lewis Nightingale who’s shot took a slight deflection off Robert Constable before hitting the back of the net.

Within minutes Farsley had taken the lead after a marauding run down the left flank by Ryan Serrant allowed him to deliver a cross into the box which was turned goal wards by a Goole defender past the despairing Tom Collins.

Sanchez Payne then tried to create a wonder goal as he did on this ground for Leeds United early in he second half, however Graeme McKibbin was equal to the task and although Danny Chambers headed home the rebound he was adjudged offside.

Goole then got a deserved equaliser as an exquisite ball from Shelley to Chambers allowed the latter to lash home.

That was as good as it got for Goole for the rest of the match, with Chris Howarth opening his account on the hour mark, controlling a terrific cross field pass by Aaron Hardy before cutting in from the right and shooting past Collins.

Howarth then added his second as Lewis Nightingale spotted him unmarked at the far post and whipped in his free-kick towards the versatile Howarth who headed home.

In the final minute of normal time a sublime through ball from Peter Davidson was latched onto by Marshall who was then brought down in the box by Tom Collins as he attempted to round the Goole ‘keeper.

Up stepped Howarth, who blasted his penalty into the back of the net and secured a safe passage into the last 16 for The Celts.
