Council chiefs have approved spending £2.93 million for the second phase of work to expand Hawksworth Wood Primary School in a bid to meet increasing demand for places.
The council wants to expand the school from a one-form entry with 210 pupil places, to a two-form entry with 420 places.
The second phase of the £4 million scheme includes building four new classrooms, refurbishment of a number of areas in the children centre, provision of a disabled toilet, a fenced games court, and extension to the car park as well as a junior football pitch.
Work already completed in phase one includes refurbishing three classrooms, a kitchen extension, conversion of the caretaker’s store into toilets and developing an external reception play area.
A council report authorising the go-ahead of phase two says:
“Analysis of available demographic data has identified that additional school places are required in the densely populated Hawksworth Wood and surrounding areas to meet demand from families living locally.
“This is due to a number of factors including: the increase in 0-5 year old children residing in these areas of Leeds and in year pressure for places in some year groups; the extensive programme of house building, both
planned and already under way in Kirkstall and surrounding areas.”
