Music for Advent and Christmas by Handel, Britten and Saint-Saëns will be featured in a festive concert in Fulneck.

Leeds Minster-based St Peter’s Singers  will be joined by the principals of the National Festival Orchestra at Fulneck Moravian Church for their annual mid-Winter Concert on Saturday, 2 December, at 7pm.

This year’s musical offerings include Benjamin Britten’s hugely popular Ceremony of Carols.

David Hawkin, from St Peter’s Singers, said:

“This unusual and highly distinctive setting, for upper voices and harp, was composed in 1942 whilst the composer was aboard a Swedish cargo vessel.

“Britten’s chance discovery of a book of medieval poems had given him urgent inspiration to devise this miniature masterpiece. The first performance was given exactly 75 years ago this year, in 1942 at Norwich Castle Library by the ladies’ voices of the Fleet Street Choir. “

The Fulneck concert continues with a performance of the seldom heard Christmas Oratorio by Camille Saint-Saëns.

The evening concludes with the first part and the Hallelujah Chorus from Handel’s Messiah.

Admission is free, doors open at 6.30pm and there will be a retiring collection for the church organ fund.

Among the vocal soloists are two Pudsey residents. One past – mezzo-soprano Lucy Appleyard – and one present – Quentin Brown from Houghside. Dr Simon Lindley, who has lived in Fulneck for 20 years, conducts and David Houlder is at the Fulneck Snetzler-Binns organ.
