Farsley Celtic beat Colwyn Bay in the league opener.

Farsley Celtic’s five-game unbeaten run came to an end as they were defeated 2-0 by Warrington Town, who were the better of two poor sides, writes Thomas Ritchie.

Will Hayhurst and Sean Williams were on target for the visitors, with chances extremely limited for both sides.

Farsley boss Adam Lakeland was left frustrated by the defeat. He said:

“They were a bit better, bit sharper and bit stronger. The first goal was always going to be important, we didn’t have that extra gear to get back in the game today.

“To play five games in the space of 10 days and get 10 points, I’d have snapped your arm off for that. The schedule we’ve had has been absolutely ridiculous. The league has got to do better, not only for ourselves, but today was a game too far for us.”

Farsley started the game on the front foot but failed to create any opportunities, and struggled to find the key pass in the final third.

A defensive mix-up between Lewis Turner and Danny Ellis then allowed Warrington to take the lead, the ball coming to Will Hayhurst whose shot from the edge of the box went straight through Graeme McKibbin who should have made the save.

It could have been two for Warrington just moments later as Jack Higgins found space in the box, however he headed Will Hayhurst’s cross agonisingly wide.

Jamie McDonald had a pair of opportunities for Warrington just before the break, McDonald dragging just wide after a Will Wells error, before he was then denied by a good McKibbin save.

Less than 10 minutes into the second-half the visitors doubled their lead, a good spell of possession seeing the ball come to Sean Williams who picked out the bottom corner with his half-volley.

The Celts finally registered a shot on target in injury time as Luke Pilling saved easily from Lewis Turner, and it was clear a run of five games in 10 days had left Farsley fatigued.

Despite the lacklustre display, Warrington manager Paul Carden was delighted with the three points. He said:

“It’s a difficult pitch to play on but from the first minute I thought we managed it well, we worked the ball forward well and totally deserved the win.

“We’ve been cheap at times but today we were back on song, and it was a really good solid performance. We pressed well, harried well and then the second goal for us was a great goal, 12 or 13 passes and a great finish, which I was delighted with.”
