League leaders Farsley were stunned by relegation threatened Goole who put in a superb defensive display to grind out a 2-1 victory, although The Celts hold onto top spot with a game in hand on second-placed Lancaster, writes Thomas Ritchie.

Farsley started brightly and looked to take the game to their opponents with Ryan Watson shooting just wide from the edge of the box following some neat build up play.

Paul Walker then gave Farsley the early advantage as he surprised Tom Beaurepaire in the Goole goal, shooting from 30 yards into the bottom corner.

But within minutes Goole were gifted the chance to level as Ryan Watson was adjudged to have felled Danny Chambers in the penalty box. Bobby Johnson stepped up and confidently dispatched his spot kick into the top corner to level the scores.

Farsley controlled the game as Goole piled men behind the ball, with Lewis Nightingale coming close as his effort took a slight deflection before Beaurepaire superbly tipped the ball over the bar.

Goole then scored a superb second against the run of play as Danny Chambers passed to Derry Robson who in turn played in Johnson who made no mistake in slotting home his second.

On the stroke of half time Farsley had a glorious opportunity to equalise as Richard Marshall made a strong run forward and put Ross Daly through on goal but he shot wide with only the ‘keeper to beat.

In a second half of few opportunities, Farsley camped themselves in the Goole half but struggled to break down their opponents as they showed a lack of penetration and innovation.

The game became scrappy with Goole fighting for their lives.

Lewis Nightingale twice came close for Farsley, first his curling effort was well held by Beaurepaire and, after being fed by Paul Walker, he shot just wide from 12 yards out.

With time running out Farsley threw everything at Goole as all 11 players crowded the Goole box, with the ball striking the crossbar as it has headed around the box for a good minute before Beaurepaire eventually grabbed control of the ball to make the save and seal victory for Goole.

Next up for Farsley they welcome Bamber Bridge to Throstle Nest on Saturday looking for a return to winning ways in another crucial game in The Celts’ promotion push.
