It’s a popular annual event that’s always marked ‘must attend’ in Worzel Gummidge’s social diary – but a lack of scarecrows has meant August’s Calverley Scarecrow Festival has had to be cancelled.
Organisers Creative Calverley took the decision today due to a lack of participants – but all is not lost as they’re holding a Hallowe’en-themed event instead.
The village’s ‘Scareycrow’ event in October is believed to be the only one of its type in the country.
A statement on Creative Calverley’s Facebook group said:
“We needed a minimum number of 25 people to enable [the August] event to be viable, due to printing and publicity costs.
“We know that people are disappointed (as are we) that the August Scarecrow Festival is not proceeding and have decided to hold a joint scarecrow/scareycrow event in October.
“Creative Calverley are proud that Calverley is the only village in the UK to hold a Hallowe’en themed scarecrow event and we hope that you can help to make this event bigger by getting involved.”
This event will run from the 24 October until the 31 October and the themes will be “Songs”, “Creative”, “Traditional” and finally “Halloween”. Entry forms are available now from the Creative Calverley website.
There are also plans for a Calverley Hoptober Fest between October 23 and 25 featuring seasonal walks, a fancy dress meal and barn dance, pumpkin carving, gingerbread decorating, apple bobbing and much more.
