Breeze on Tour: Up to 3,000 expected at Armley Park this weekend

Thousands of local young people are expected to flock to Armley Park for some free fun in the sun this weekend.

The event on Saturday and Sunday will be the first of this summer’s Breeze on Tour activities, and will include a packed programme of inflatables, sports and art workshops for young people to enjoy.

Last summer’s Breeze events attracted more than 21,000 young people, with up to 3,000 expected this weekend. Activities include breakdancing, show skipping, outdoor bush skills, beauty, crochet, rag rug making, arts and crafts, CD and DVD making as well as singing and music lessons and have the opportunity to star in a rock band.

Visitors to Armley Park on Saturday will also get the chance to see the Rugby Union Web Ellis Cup which will be on display between 3pm and 4pm as part of a whistle-stop tour of world cup venues.

Breeze on Tour offers a variety of activities from arts, crafts and multimedia workshops, sports activities, information, a performance tent and a large range of inflatables such as obstacle courses, rock climbers, challenge games and sporting inflatables as well as an under five play section. Breeze on Tour is split into six zones; Play, Sport, Challenge, Info, Art and Performance.

Councillor Lucinda Yeadon, executive member for children and families said;

“These events are a great opportunity for children and young people to come along, join thousands of others their own age and try some activities that are fun, free and different. It’s also something parents can take their kids along to and get them out and about over the summer holidays without breaking the bank.”

The Breeze has Talent heats will also be taking place at the Breeze on Tour events. This is the second stage of the competition and will take place every day in the performance tent. Following these heats the finalists will be selected for the final which is being held in October at Northern Ballet Theatre.

All activities are free but some charges apply at the fairground zone and refreshment stalls.

A special opening time of 11am has been arranged for young people with additional needs on the second day of each event. This needs to be pre-booked by calling . A personal tour guide and high dependecy unit are also available.
