Residents of Bramley have responded on social media to news that the former Globe Pub on Town Street may become a funeral directors, writes Jill Buckley.

The former pub was sold recently and a planning application has been submitted for a change of use to ground floor to funeral services and retail use with access ramps to front/side and privacy screen to rear.

Although the fabric of the building will remains the same, the first floor will become two flats and there will be a new parking area.

After much speculation over recent months since its closure last year Councillor Kevin Ritchie announced the news on Facebook on Sunday. He said:

“It’s not what we were expecting for the site and it’s a shame to lose an historic pub. Myself and my colleagues Councillors Gruen and Heslewood will discuss with the planners to ensure a sympathetic development in keeping with the area.”

The application has been submitted by Full Circle Funerals. Comments regarding the application are invited by 19th April 2018.

You can see the full application – and comment – here.

Bramley residents responded to the news on Facebook group Memories of Bramley, with many sad to see that it would no longer be a pub and recalled memories of their times there.

Ali Arnison said:

“That’s sad that it isn’t going to stay a pub. Magic Marco’s discos were ace. Always wore white because if you wore black the UV lights made you look like you had really bad dandruff! Some good memories made in there.”

Neil Cooper also had happy memories of the Globe and the pubs of Bramley:

“What a shame, great local pub with great local people. Had some great times in there. DJ and disco night on a Sunday, pub run on a weekend; Globe, Cardigan, Barley Mow. How times change.”

Others pointed out that this was yet another community pub lost. Marion Yewdall wrote:

“Not many pubs are left I know. If you want to save your public houses then go out and use them more often, it is the only answer. Use them or lose them…..”

Some, however, found the humour value in its change of use. Dawn Forrester commented:

“Been dead in there for five years anyway but shame to see another pub go in Bramley.”

Roger Cliff, from Bramley History Society, thanked Councillor Ritchie for passing on the news:

“It’s a shame it will never be a pub again but, with luck, and twenty years down the line, I might need their services again!!!”

Prospect Mills

Meanwhile, plans to turn nearby 19th century Prospect Mills off Broad Lane into five flats have been submitted by developers.

The building was more recently used as a builders’ merchants and a gym and is currently empty.

Plans can be read in full here.
