Councillors have today blocked an application to sell alcohol on Armley Town Street – the second such decision in a week.

Members of Leeds City Council’s licensing committee decided to reject Fresh Metro Cooperation’s application for a licence to sell alcohol from 90 Town Street every day from 8am until 11.30pm.

Concerns centred around the possible impact another outlet selling alcohol might have on existing problems with street drinking and anti-social behaviour in the area.

On social media Armley councillor Alison Lowe described the decision as ‘another knock-out blow’ for alcohol sales on Town Street.

There were 11 objections to the proposals, including representations from local residents, Armley Community Forum and local politicians.

Today’s decision at the Civic Hall was the second refusal in Armley in the past week.

An application for an off-licence at Potraviny International Foods on Town Street was last week rejected by the council as being unsuitable for the area.

The Town Street area is to be subject of a cumulative impact policy, which will make it more difficult for new off licences to be granted.

As reported by The Dispatch, the policy has been given the go ahead by the council’s licensing committee, but it is still to be rubberstamped at this month’s meeting of full council.
