An application to sell alcohol at a Chinese and Thai takeaway in Armley has met with local opposition.

Mr Hui Yu Lin wants to sell alcohol from his Oriental Star takeaway six days a week between 5pm and 11pm.

In a report compiled by council licensing officers, it’s noted that Mr Lin’s takeaway in Armley Ridge Road is outside the parts of Armley covered by a policy limiting the number of premises that can sell alcohol.

His application has met with both support and opposition.

Leeds West MP Rachel Reeves is opposing the application alongside Armley’s local councillors and several local residents. She said it went against efforts to tackle anti-social behaviour and substance abuse in Armley and added:

“With such a large number of premises already selling alcohol nearby, including the premises next door, any decision to approve this application would be incompatible with the measurers already in place to limit the availability of alcohol sales in Armley.”

The application has also attracted two letters of support from customers and local residents. One customer disagreed that it would contribute to street drinking and said:

“The staff in Oriental Star are very friendly and conscientious and I am sure that they would take the responsibility of selling alcohol very seriously and abide by the laws already in place preventing them from selling alcohol to the intoxicated or street drinkers.”

In his application Mr Lin says the takeaway has CCTV and that staff will be briefed on rules surrounding the sale of alcohol.

His application will be heard at a meeting of the council’s licensing sub committee at Leeds Civic Hall on Tuesday, 18 April.

The meeting, which is open for the public to attend, starts at 10am and the documents associated with the Oriental Star application can be read in full here.
