A 24-year-old was arrested by armed police following reports of a man carrying a handgun in Armley town centre.

At just before midday yesterday (Saturday) police received two separate calls relating to a man in possession of what was thought to be a handgun in the area of Edinburgh Terrace and Armley Town Street.

Armed police were called to the area to arrest the suspect.

In an update on the Leeds Inner West page on Facebook, police stressed the public was not at risk during the incident:

“At no time were any members of the public in danger. The weapon was not a fully functioning firearm, and as such could not have caused any physical injury to anyone, although obviously caused concern, and fear to those that called in the incident. Our thanks go out to the people that called us.”
