Matalan is set to move into a retail unit in Kirkstall and create 42 new jobs – if it receives planning permission to alter an existing store.
The clothing giant has submitted a planning application to extend an existing mezzanine level at a store at Kirkstall Retail Park, off Savins Mill Way.
The store, which is currently occupied by Intersport Sporting Pro, is shortly to become vacant.
In a planning and retail statement submitted by Indigo Planning on behalf of Matalan, architects say the clothing retailer needs the additional floorspace before they can occupy the unit. It adds:
“The extended mezzanine forms an essential part of their business model and is needed to accommodate a range of goods that they would otherwise be unable to stock.
“Their occupation will not involve any change in the permitted range of goods that are already sold from the unit.”
The proposals would see the mezzanine level extended by 494 sq metres to an overall total of 1,438 sq metres.
The full planning application submitted to Leeds City Council can be found here.
As reported by The Dispatch in July, Leeds City Council recently approved proposals by Morrisons for two new retail units – both with mezzanine levels – at the retail park. The new units are directly to the north of the proposed Matalan store. There had been local concerns about the impact of extra traffic in the area.
Meanwhile, Arcadia Group have submitted plans for an external plant area containing nine air conditioning units and four high-level louvres within the rear service yard over the road at the new Kirkstall Bridge Retail Park, which is due to open in November.
